Abstract

The aims of this research is to investigated the needs and the process of designing English writing worksheet based on Experiential learning approach integrated with local wisdom content for 9th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumalata Timur. This research is a development research that aims to develop writing skills based on Experiential learning approach to improve the skills of English writing for junior high school students in Sumalata Timur. This research used R & D (Research and Development) method. The model choosen of developing English writing worksheet was used ADDIE model proposed by Branch (2009) that simplified to four steps: Analysis, Design, Development and Implementation.The data collection are questionnaires and document ones. This is an effort to improve the ability of English writing skill through the development of Experiential learning based writing worksheet. The research population was junior highschool students in Sumalata Timur. The research sample was to be students in 9th grade of SMP Negeri 2 Sumalata Timur. The result of the research indicated that most of the students admit that their English proficiency level is average. The needs analysis indicates the inclination towards structured learning materials organized in a progression, displayed divergent preferences, also the desire for practical tips and strategies related to the topics under discussion. The ouput of this research is a writing worksheet based on Experiential learning stages integrated with local wisdom content and purposed to assess students’ writing ability. The result of expert judgment and small group test show that the designed product is in “very good” category with some shortcomings caused by the time and budget constrains. Those of which indicate the endeavor to develop more engaging, innovative, and efficacious learning materials, particularly in the form of writing worksheets, exploring diverse themes and activities.
