The data for this study are taken from the utterances of Sam as the main character in “I am Sam” movie. Using descriptive qualitative method, the data were collected by applying note taking technique, and were analyzed by using theory by John Carroll (1985) on expressive language disorder which can be categorize into five types, namely word finding difficulty, limited vocabulary, overuse of non specific words, over reliance on stock phrase and the last is difficulty coming to the point (in speaking). The researcher found that Sam as the main character who also suffers from mental retardation showed all of the five types of expressive language disorder, among those five types, Sam approximately faces expressive language disorder in limited vocabulary as the first type which include three data, over reliance on stock phrase which also include three data, then difficulty of coming to the point that conceive two data. Meanwhile, the least types of expressive language disorder found in the utterances of Sam are word finding difficulty and overuse of non-specific words which consist of single data for each type.
