Abdjul, M. N. (2023). Indirect Speech Act in Brave Movie (A Pragmatics Analysis). Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. This research discusses the structure and the function of indirect speech acts found in Brave Movie. The objective of this research is to find out the structure and the function of indirect speech acts in Brave Movie using Searle’s theory supported by Yule (1996). The significance of the research theoretically can be helpful to increase the readers’ knowledge of pragmatics, specifically the understanding of speech act to be precisely the indirect speech act. Practically, the ability to speech act can also be implemented in people’s daily life conversations, whether to communicate or to express something. Further, this research will be useful to facilitate other researchers who study the same topic of indirect speech acts to get more for their literary review. The methodology used in this research is qualitative descriptive, in which the researcher used the note-taking technique of data collection to collect the data and descriptively explain the data analysis using Leech’s (1989) Aspect of Situation theory. The research result found that there are three structures of indirect speech act in Brave Movie that have different functions in each structure, in which the usage of indirect speech act in Brave Movie related to the background of the movie, which is kingdom life. The characters managed to use indirect speech acts due to several considerations such as the relationship between the characters and the dominance they have in their positions. Thus, the usage of indirect speech act based on the data found is to sound more polite, to force the utterance, and to make the utterance sounds more interesting.
