Abstract

Stevy Stelani Yanala. 321419059. 2023.” The Cultural Identity and Othering Process of American Chinese in the Novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan”. Thesis. English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Literature and Culture. Gorontalo State University. Advisor I: Dr. Magdalena Baga, S.S., M.Si. Advisor II: Novi Rusnarty Usu, S.Pd., M.A. This study aims to analyze the Cultural Identity of American Chinese and the othering process in the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. This research uses Swingewood's Sociology of Literature approach and Stuart Hall's cultural identity theory. The data is taken from Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club and journals, articles and books as supporting information. The results of this research reveal that the first generation of Chinese still maintains the culture of China even though some of some cultures have experienced a shift in cultural meaning, while the second generation of China has begun to be separated from the Chinese culture that the first generation of China is trying to inherit. The othering process that occurs in both generations shows that there is an ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’ classification in Chinese society both in mainland Chinese and The Joy Luck Club. The cultural shift and othering process that occurs show that the cultural identity of the two generations of Chinese has been in the Becoming Process stage, where the first generation of Chinese identity is a Chinese American cultural identity and the second generation of Chinese cultural identity is a American Chinese cultural identity. Keywords: Cultural Identity, immigrant, othering, Chinese.
