Understanding how individualsusepoliteness strategy in different contexts is a very interesting topic. Regarding this, this study aims to find out the types of politeness strategy by the fictional chracterMaleficent, in Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil movie by using the theory from Brown and Levinson (1987).This study utilizesqualitative descriptive method in which the data are taken from theutterances of Maleficent in the movie dialogue. The result showedthat she employs all four types of politeness strategies: bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. Bald on-record strategy comprises six sub-categories. Meanwhile, positive politeness strategy encompasses five sub-categories, negative politeness strategy involves four sub-types, and off-record strategy consists of five sub-categories. This analysis demonstrates the diverse range of politeness strategies employed by Maleficent in her interactions throughout the movie. By understanding the definition of politeness strategies and their sub-categories, we gain insights into Maleficent's nuanced communication techniques, providing a reflection of real-life and the way of maintaining relationships through effective communication.
