Abstract

LA ABA 2024: Critical Discourse Analysis of Political Language in the Context of America Presidential Speeches. Institution: State University of Gorontalo, Applied Linguistics Postgraduate Program Main Advisor: Prof. Dr. Hasanudin Fatsah, M.Hum Co-Advisors: Dr. Harto Malik, M.Hum, and Dr. Abid, MA.TESOL Linguistic features, discursive strategies, and language choices in campaign speeches delivered by candidates for the U.S. presidency are examined in this research, with a focus placed on political discourse. Words, phrases, keywords, sentences, and slogans are analyzed to enhance persuasive communication. Recurring linguistic patterns in Barack Obama's and Joe Biden's speeches are also highlighted. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) design Documentation, including campaign speech transcripts and video content from YouTube, is used for data collection. Linguistic features, discursive strategies, language choices, and frequently appearing linguistic features are categorized during the data collection process, and their implications are analyzed using data cards. Three key findings are revealed by this study: Linguistic Features: Keywords, slogans, and specific phrases are identified as significant contributors to clarity and persuasive appeal in political discourse. Discursive Strategies and Language Choices: Narratives, inclusive language, direct appeals, and thematic repetition in campaign videos on YouTube are shown to enhance the candidates' ability to connect with their audience. Frequent Linguistic Features: Repetition, rhetorical questions, and emotional language are frequently employed by Barack Obama to reinforce key messages, engage the audience, and establish emotional connections. Similarly, repetition, contrasting phrases, inclusivity-related expressions, and emotive language are identified as frequent linguistic features in Joe Biden's speeches.
