Advisor (1) Dr. Usman Pakaya, S.S, M.A (2) Jefriyanto Saud, S.Pd., M.A. Language is essential for communication in human life and individuals must follow the cooperative principle to ensure successful communication. however, Misunderstandings can occur when the rules are not followed, leading to conversational implicature and the need for understanding implicit messages. This research aims to describe the types of conversational implicature utterances in The Perks of Being a Wallflower movie directed by Stephen Chbosky. This study is focused on Grice’s conversational implicature theory (1975). The researcher applies the theory from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s data analysis theory in analyzing the data, by applying the descriptive qualitative method. This study found that the script for the movie adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower contains twenty-three different conversational implicature instances. The information that was found included six data pertaining to generalized conversational implicature and seventeen data pertaining to particularized conversational implicature. In addition, in the conversational implicature in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, there are a lot of implicit meanings included within the discourse, and likely in everyday life as well. The outcome of this study is expected to provide additional new knowledge about the use of conversational implicature and understanding regarding implied meanings that occur in conversation in the movie.
