Abstract

Learning vocabulary first make someone more able to master other skills such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. In this study, the researher investigates what are the challenges of students in learning English vocabulary. The researcher used qualitative research, data collection was done by interview and analyezed descriptively. After conducting the research and collecting data from six students, it was found that ninth-grade students of SMPN 5 Batudaa Pantai faced various challenges in learning English vocabulary. These challenges include the disparity between writing and pronunciation, difficulty in memorization, differences between writing and reading, lack of learning tools, and fear of mispronunciation. To address these challenges, students generally rely on dictionaries as their primary source of learning English vocabulary. However, they can also benefit from expanding their vocabulary learning methods and utilizing more convenient digital dictionaries. Additionally, students need to implement proactive strategies, such as strengthening study habits, practicing skills directly, and increasing motivation to overcome difficulties in vocabulary learning.
