Principal Supervisor: Prof. Nonny Basalama, M.A., Ph.D. Co-Supervisor: Dr. Abid, S.S., M.A. TESOL. This research intends to examine how English major students in the English Department perceive the TOEFL exam. Using qualitative method, this research selected narrative inquiry method as the research design as a means of interpreting the students’ voices. This research selected the students of English Department of UNG as the participants and the sample are 12 students who have taken the TOEFL test, which were divided into two categories, namely those who have passed the test and those who have not with six students for each category. The data of this research were collected by using an interview and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that the participants display mixed responses regarding the test where it consists of positive and negative responses. Participants responded positively by implying that TOEFL is necessary for measuring English skills and helps students in applying for jobs. For the negative response, the participants implied that TOEFL test poses challenges and minimum TOEFL score needs to be lowered. By focusing on this topic, the readers, especially institutions, can help to ensure that all students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.
